How does coffee grow?

Bush or Tree?

Bush and Tree!

Coffee species grow as both small trees and bushes. Robusta coffee trees are smaller than Arabica coffee trees and measure only 3-6m compared to Arabica coffee trees, which grow 6-8m tall.

It is only after 3-5 years that a bush bears coffee cherries for the first time, in which our appreciated coffee beans are found.

Arabica bushes self-pollinate (self-fertile) whereas in Robusta bushes, cross-pollination occurs, which is mainly carried out by the wind.

How much does a bush produce?

The yield can, as with most plants, vary considerably and amounts to about 80kg to 2,500 kg of coffee cherries per hectare. From 100 kg of coffee cherries, you then get only about 20 kg of raw coffee beans.

What color are coffee cherries?

Unripe coffee cherries are initially green and gradually become more yellowish as they ripen, eventually turning red. However, not all ripe coffee cherries are red. There are also yellow and orange ripe coffee cherries.
