Espresso comes from Italy, to be precise it is a coffee preparation method originating from Milan, in which hot water at high pressure is forced through very finely ground coffee from roasted coffee beans.
How is espresso prepared?
In the preparation of an espresso, much less water is used than for a Café Crème although the same amount of ground coffee is used.
Usually only 25 ml to a maximum of 40 ml of water are used.
Since the ground coffee for espresso is much more finely ground than for a Café Crème, it is important that fully automatic coffee machines or capsule machines work with sufficient high pressure, otherwise the coffee aroma cannot develop.
Which coffee is best used for espresso?
Dark roasts are best for espresso. The longer coffee beans are roasted, the more roasting aromas mask fruity flavor notes.
Especially for espresso, smoky roasting aromas are more desired, which is why the roasts are generally darker.
