Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Questions about beanarella coffee capsules

    • Are beanarella coffee capsules compatible with other capsule systems?

No. beanarella coffee capsules can only be used with beanarella coffee machines and are not compatible with other systems. The entire beanarella capsule system was developed specifically for the compostable material used in our capsules. Other systems work by puncturing the capsules with a needle. Our capsules would get stuck in those machines. The beanarella system is different: the capsules are neither punctured nor broken. Instead, the system works with high pressure (20 bar) to force the water through the filter.

    • What should I do with used capsules?

beanarella capsules are the only coffee capsules in the world that are 100% compostable. We recommend disposing of the used capsules in the organic waste or green waste collection, where they can be processed in a composting plant and turned into compost within 4-12 weeks. We documented the composting process in the following video:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3R7hod6haE

    • What are the capsules made of?

beanarella coffee capsules are made from bioplastic. The components mainly come from renewable raw materials. The capsules consist largely of polylactic acid, cellulose and calcium carbonate. Polylactic acid is obtained from renewable raw materials based on sugar beet and corn.

    • How are the capsules composted?

You can watch the composting process in our YouTube video:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3R7hod6haE

    • How is the coffee aroma protected? How long do the capsules stay fresh after opening the package?

The coffee capsules are sealed in our newly developed airtight packaging, which is also 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable. After opening the package, we recommend using the capsules within 2-3 weeks to avoid any loss of aroma. Please reseal opened packages carefully.

You can use the wooden clips available in our shop for this purpose.

You can also store the opened package in the fridge to help keep the coffee fresh.

    • Why are the packages so bulky?

Freshly roasted and ground coffee continues to release gas. Therefore, the package must provide enough space for this gas. Otherwise, the package could burst.

    • Is beanarella packaging also compostable?

Yes, beanarella packaging is also 100% compostable.

  • Questions about beanarella coffee

    • How is our coffee roasted? Is it high in acidity?

All coffee beans are roasted in Switzerland's oldest roasting house using traditional drum-roasting methods. Thanks to the low roasting temperatures and extended roasting time, our coffee is low in acidity and gentle on the stomach.

    • Which coffee varieties are organic and fair trade?

beanarella uses only fair trade and organic coffee.

    • What does fair trade mean?

Fair trading conditions allow farmers and workers in coffee-producing countries to invest in a sustainable future.

    • How much coffee is in one capsule? And how much does it cost?

Each capsule contains between 6.3 and 6.8 grams of freshly ground coffee, depending on the variety. One package contains 10 capsules and costs between CHF 4.60 and CHF 4.90.

    • Are there any concerning substances in the coffee or the capsules?

No. The capsules contain no plasticisers, heavy metals or aluminium. We use only organic coffee and do not add preservatives or flavourings. The contents of our capsules are 100% freshly roasted and ground coffee.

  • Questions about beanarella coffee machines

    • Which machine can I use to prepare coffee or espresso?

All our models use a 20-bar pump and are suitable for preparing both coffee and espresso.

    • Can I adjust the cup size myself?

Yes. Simply press and hold the coffee button until the desired amount has been dispensed. The machine will then save the new setting. We recommend 25 ml for a ristretto, 40 ml for an espresso and 110 ml for a coffee.

    • How do I descale my beanarella coffee machine?

We recommend using our water filter.

Its filtration technology reduces limescale and other substances that can affect taste and aroma.

In addition, we recommend descaling your coffee machine regularly with a liquid descaler based on lactic acid. Depending on the hardness of your water, we recommend descaling your machine every 2-3 months.

    • Is the milk frother easy to clean (model Fay)?

Yes. The milk frother is dishwasher-safe. The internal parts of the machine do not come into contact with the milk, as the milk container works independently and the milk is poured into the cup manually. You can see how it works here:
